Outfit Ideas from Grandma

The credo of the photo blog, Advanced Style (sort of a “Sartorialist” for senior citizens) is that personal style advances with age. Considering my own past—and numerous—fashion faux pas, I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment. Here’s to granny-chic, after the jump!

When in doubt, bust out something red

When in doubt, bust out something red

I’m loving this lady’s cherry-color blazer, which brightens up her whole outfit. While it’s definitely a bold statement, it works if you keep the rest of your outfit subdued or all-black, as here. My second favorite detail is the wide-brimmed, black hat—mega-chic.

Throw on an oversize coat

I love the slightly outrageous, Old Hollywood-esque look of a vintage trench or winter coat. This one has a menswear vibe that contrasts perfectly with her ladylike headscarf and shades.

Embrace the cross-body bag trend

Embrace the cross-body bag trend

In case you hadn’t noticed, fashionistas of all ages have started carrying their bags on their shoulder again—such a relief to those of us who always hated carrying bag in hand anyway (what if someone nabs it?!) How great does this woman’s half-moon shape hobo look in rich, dark brown leather! Plus, she’s rocking the old-school driving gloves—love.

Go monochromatic

Go monochromatic

Designers have been sending all-one-color looks down the runway but few women dare in real life—especially when that one color happens to be extra-hot, like this woman’s “Hermes” orange-hued skirt suit. (In fact, the suit is made of neoprene, the creation of French designer, Elizabeth de Senneville). It’s well-played with the matching bag, black tights—oh, and the amazing little gloves

Know the power of a good necklace—or several

There’s no style secret so attainable as that of the statement necklace (this lady is a jeweler who makes her own). Pick one with lots of gold and whimsical stuff, as here, and layer over any old thing you’re wearing and you’ll look—voila!—ten times fancier.

You’re never too old for groovy sunglasses

Impressed by how this woman totally rocks her John Lennon glasses? I was too. Choose a shape that suits your face shape and personality and look for frames in a not-boring color (you don’t need another pair of tortoise sunnies!) to make bigger impact.
