10 Summer Beauty Secrets

Here, A-list hair and makeup pros serve up their tips and tricks that are normally reserved for celebrities and supermodels.

Perfect Air-Dried Hair

A little planning goes a long way with blow-dryer-free styles.

“When your hair is wet, use a sculpting gel and twist sections of hair away from your face. There’s no need to secure ends, so let the coils dry naturally, before finger tousling the ends into loose waves,” notes celebrity colorist Natasha Sunshine, who counts Ivanka Trump and Molly Sims as clients.

Upgrade Your Comb

Add SPF protection to every beach bag staple, including your combs.

“I love combs that are infused with sunscreen oil,” says hairstylist and co-creator of R-Session hot tools, Frank Rizzieri. “You evenly disperse product as you detangle your hair, plus the oil helps tame frizzy ends.”

Repurpose Your Beach Sprays

Salt sprays can be used to get glam hair, too.

Protect Those Highlights

Sun-scorched strands fade fast—always shield yours from harmful rays.

“If you don’t want to wear a scarf or hat when you leave the house, spritz a leave-in conditioner with SPF over strands to guard against shade-altering UV rays,” warns colorist Lorri Goddard-Clark, who tends to Reese Witherspoon and Drew Barrymore’s magnificent manes.

Use Foundation—on Your Lips

Smudge-proof lipstick starts with a solid base.

“Before applying lipstick, I dab foundation on the lips to create a canvas for the lip color,” explains makeup artist Collier Strong. “Then, picking the right lip shade is as easy as looking at your wardrobe. Do you wear cool tones or warm ones? Brights or neutrals? Follow those guidelines at the drugstore and you can’t go wrong.”

To create the illusion of a more toned bod, learn how to strategically apply bronzer from head to toe.

“To appear slimmer in the face, brush bronzer under your cheekbones and along your hair line,” advises makeup artist Moani Lee, who perfects the mugs (and gams) of the Victoria’s Secret Angels. “On the body, I like to dust shimmer powder across the chest and along the tops of the arms and legs to elongate silhouettes.”

Fake a Girlish Blush

They key to wearing blush well is to know where to put it—and when to take it off.

“Blush is one of the biggest trends for fall, but expect people to start wearing it a lot this summer,” explains makeup artist Pat McGrath, who created the flushed looks at Prada and Nina Ricci. “To create these bolder looks, I prefer cream blushes because it’s easier to wipe away excess if you apply too much. For a soft glow, I apply as usual and then blot the outer cheekbones with a tissue to allow natural skin tone to peak through.”
