Karl Lagerfeld set a melancholy tone with his gothic, neo-classical show for spring/summer 2013. The Grand Palais, a vast Beaux-Arts building edging the Champs Elysée and the banks of the Seine, was transformed into a dream-like scene with dark trees, winding pathways and mythical flowers providing an eery but romantic mood.

Guests watched as stern-looking models appeared like mythical fairies from the enchanted forest setting.  The show started with a selection of tweed ensembles, tailored and sculpted to show off the shoulders in a rounded, exaggerated manner.  Lagerfeld described the style as ‘frame shoulders’ – a silhouette designed to show off the delicacy of the neck.  The show continued with this theme, with long column gowns and skirt suits showing off an elegant off-the-shoulder look.

A restrained palette of navy and powder blue, monochrome, silver and red florals, lent the collection a confident and subtlety luminescent air.  The beautiful feathery eye make-up and wispy hair added some drama to the show and gave it a distinctly romantic twist.

Not one to shy away from controversy, Lagerfeld poked fun at the gay marriage debate in France by ending the show with two brides, both dressed in stunning Chanel wedding gowns.

It was a day for British models, with Stella Tennant opening the show and girl-of-the-moment Cara Delevingne stealing the limelight in a structured little black dress.
