Six tips for buying the perfect pair of jeans

  • Try high-rise jeans in a dark wash that are little bigger than you think you are. These give a sleek silhouette, a flattering line and will get you through your initial horror by avoiding an immediate sense of failure.
  • Always try on with a white T-shirt so you can see properly how they fit. None of that shambling into a pair under a long rugby shirt and thinking “they’ll do”.
  • “If it zips, it fits.” Getting into skinny jeans should always involve a little wriggling. If there’s more than an inch spare at the waist you need a smaller size. Boyfriend cut should be a loose fit (no wriggling), but not to the point of falling off.
  • Don’t just sling new jeans in the laundry with everything else: wear them for about 10 days before the first wash; use a cold-water cycle; do not use fabric conditioner and do not tumble dry.
  • Don’t worry about keeping up with fashion – with jeans it’s all about the shape that suits you. This is true of most clothing choices, but is more often ignored when it comes to jeans.
  • Invest in a great bag, good shoes, a terrific jacket to go with your new jeans.
